It was closed in 1961 because of the discovery of antibiotics which could cure tuberculosis and. During it’s use, there were around 63,000 patients who died because of the disease or through the unusual treatment methods being used in the hospital.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium has a tunnel called the the “body chute”. This tunnel was used for the movement of materials used in building the hospital. The tunnel was eventually used as an alternative route for the dead bodies of patients from the hospital down to the tunnel’s exit at the bottom of the hill.

This is why it was called “the body chute”. Many stories about Waverly Hills involve the body chute and the ghosts that haunt the tunnel, as well as about the doctors who opened up the bodies of dead patients and drained them.
