The Demon in the Corner
Location: York County, Pennsylvania (Martinsville)
Timeperiod: Early Spring, 2006
When I was in middle school, I had a good friend who lived about five minutes away from me. She had a slumber party for her birthday in eighth grade, and seven girls including myself stayed the night at her house.
After all but one girl had arrived to the party, we decided to convince my friend to show us her barn. She’d already told us plenty of times that it was haunted. At first, she refused, but we were persistent. As we walked to the back of her yard, she told us very seriously, “Just be careful.”
Though it was bright and sunny outside, the barn was dark and cold. We walked around the barn, huddled together, as she told us various stories about the barn and its many hauntings. I don’t remember most of the stories, because I didn’t see any of them, but the last one stuck with me.
We heard a car pull up in the driveway and were about to leave the barn disappointed but my friend stopped us. “Do you see that thing back in that stall?” she asked us in an undertone. Looking out into the back corner of the barn, I saw a small dark creature that seemed almost like a charcoal drawing in substance crouching against the wall. It had legs that bend forward in a lower knee, then backward above it, and stick thin arms with long fingers ending in talons. Its head was dominated by two completely empty eyes that I could see the cinderblock wall through on the other side. Somehow, I was not sure if it was real or simply a lucky but terrifying shadow. “That’s the demon in the corner. It’s always there,” she said conversationally, and with that was ready to lead us out. Clearly spooked, we all stumbled our way out of the barn, myself last. But my foot caught in some loose boards and I got stuck. When I looked around in panic, I saw that the “demon” was not in the corner anymore. It was closer to me, staring. I don’t think I’ve ever screamed that loudly in my life. I managed to jerk free and bolted after the others. I still don’t think they believe me, but that thing came out of its corner and I’m still terrified to think of what it would have done if it caught me.
