Pioneer Catholic Cemetery in Marquette, Michigan:Previously…

Pioneer Catholic Cemetery in Marquette, Michigan:

Previously referred to as Old #Catholic #Cemetery, the Pioneer Catholic Cemetery in Marquette, #Michigan was used by early #European settlers of Marquette County beginning in the mid-1800’s. The cemetery was filled to capacity in 1908, at which point the location began to fall into a state of neglect and disrepair. Between 1912 and 1925 over 160 #historic headstones and burial sites were relocated to the nearby Holy Cross Cemetery in an attempt to prevent further deterioration, however many of the bodies associated with the grave sites were unable to be located. For this reason the Pioneer Catholic Cemetery is said to be #haunted by the #spirits of those men and women whose final resting places were disturbed, and who may still be buried in unmarked graves. #Paranormal enthusiasts and other visitors to the historic cemetery often report hearing the sounds of disembodied voices, whispers, and sobs, as well as feeling the presence of an unseen entity. In 2016 the Pioneer Catholic Cemetery was restored by a group called Friends of Holy Cross Cemetery, and is open for public visitation during daylight hours.
