odense:

““he’s gone,” they say,
“he is decaying in the earth.
his own shadow
does not recognize him.” but i say –
with my glitter-teeth smile – watch me dig him up
and take him between my palms.
watch me kiss the dirt
from the corners of his eyes,
watch me wash
his bloody knuckles clean. i will hold him,
i will warm him by the fire
and dress him in new
clean clothes.
i will be his pulse.
i will help him breathe. “he’s a lost cause,” they say,
“he is hollow and echoing
like an empty bullet casing.” but i say –
with his face tucked into the crook of my neck – watch me carry him
out of the dead land.
watch me hold him in the warmth
until he thaws.
and then,
with his head
pressed against my heart, watch me bring him back to life.”
