Cats on the Stairs

So Middle school through High school, due to my siblings taking up too many rooms, I ended up sleeping in a bedroom of the unfinished basement of our house. It was completed and everything, just composed entirely of cement and wooden beams, giving it a creepy feeling whenever I had to cross the floor from the stairs to my bedroom, the only finished part of it.

One night I couldn’t sleep, so I stayed up reading. My iPod was out of charge, so for once I didn’t have music playing. I was able to hear it as my two cats ran up and down the stairs, with whatever gusto drives cats to do inane things like that repeatedly. The sound was unmistakable, as I had memorized each of those creaks with many travels up and down those stairs.

As time passed, I began to notice something unusual. They were running up the stairs more than usual, and their footsteps sounded just a bit too heavy, though with the same speed you would expect out of cats. As I listened, I realized, I only heard them running down the stairs, not up them. Were they just running down them and slowly tiptoeing back up? That seemed unusual, I didn’t hear a single creak.

Approximately five minutes after I noticed this, there was a new element added to the phenomenon. Right after I heard “them” running down the stairs, I more… felt, than heard, them continuing to rush across the basement floor and stop directly in front of my door. It was the creepiest feeling I ever had.

I happened to glance at the clock at some point, and note the time. Hoping that whatever it was had passed, I settled in to sleep. Exactly five minutes later it happened again. The same movement of feet, the same feeling of something rushing at my door and stopping just short of it. And again. And again. Every five minutes exactly it would happen until I finally passed out, too terrified to do much else.

I wonder what would have happened if I opened the door.

Fuck Yeah Nightmares Mod Weeper answered: Ah that’s eerie. 9/10 for scares and thanks for sharing.
