I kinda feel sorry for people who didn’t grow up in houses that were built at least 150ys ago. Because in the UK at least, they’re cold as fuck so you can pretend you’re a child dying of consumption and wear dramatic clothes even in mid summer. Every stair and floorboard creaks, often when no one is walking on them. The rooms are all different sizes: you can have a bedroom that is a glorified bit of attic (where the servants slept) but the sitting room and dinning room are the size of a small conference hall. Not to mention the sash windows are single-paned and at the frames, and down the chimney, the wind shrieks when it feels like it. Your house won’t necessarily be haunted, but it will FEEL like it is. Which, y’know, is a really handy upbringing for a necromantic witch. (I mean, the house I grew up in was really quite haunted, but that’s entirely beside my point.)
