El Duende

My family and I live in California now but my parents are originally from Mexico, and the majority of our relatives still live there. We used to make the trip to Mexico every year for the holidays but due to our financial situation we weren’t able to visit for a couple of years until this past holiday season. The last time we were there was about 10 years ago. I was very young so I don’t remember very much of those past visits.

We stay with my grandmother when we visit, and she lives in a farming village. The first night we were there I had a dream about walking in some fields. That same day I was out helping my grandmother feed her chickens and I told her about my dream. She asked me if i remember playing in the fields when I was a little girl, and I told her that I didn’t really remember anything from the other times I visited. She then went on to tell me that I would always go out into the fields by a small patch of trees and play until dark. I asked her if I played with any of my cousins or other kids from the village and she says that I always played by myself. She says that she would always have to go out and look for me and I would always complain because I wanted to stay with my friend. She says that I used to always talk about “mis amigitos” or my little friends. I used to tell her that they were really small and didn’t have any shoes. After I told her that she didn’t let me play outside by myself anymore.

The people of that village are very superstitious, and there are many tales to warn children to behave. She says that she warned me about duendes, which are like goblins or elves.( At the time I didn’t know anything about duendes, but now I recall stories about how they would lure children into the woods and take them.) She told me that the next day she went to the market and left me with one of my uncles. My uncle had fallen asleep at some point and I had wandered off somewhere. She said that they had everyone in the village looking for me and that no one could find me. It was late at night when they finally found me asleep behind some trees near the field I used to play in. I vaguely remember some of this actually. I remember my mother was crying and she was yelling at me for wandering off. I asked my mom about this and she says that it was all true. She also said that when she took me home she noticed I wasn’t wearing the brand new white sandals she had gotten for me the day before. She says that I told her my friend’s feet hurt from walking on branches so I gave them my shoes. She thought I was lying and I had lost the shoes. She had gone back to the spot they found me the next day but she never found the sandals.

The next night when I was in bed falling asleep, I heard someone walking around the room. I assumed it was my grandmother coming in to get something, so I didn’t think anything of it and went to sleep. I couldn’t sleep well that night, and I kept waking up at random times. That morning when I got up and made my bed I heard something fall to the floor. When I bent down to see what it was I found a small, white sandal.
