On the 15th of October, 2018, neighbours of James Closs and Denise Closs of Barron, Wisconsin, heard two shots from near their home. None thought to alert police; the area is known for hunters and they thought nothing of it. Shortly afterwards, a 911 call was made from inside the home. While nobody was on the other end of the line, the 911 operator heard a disturbance in the background and muffled shouting and screaming.

Police traced the call to the Closs residence. When they arrived at the scene, they first noticed that the front door had been shot and kicked in. Inside, they discovered the two slain bodies of James and Denise; they had both been shot dead but no weapon was recovered. Their daughter, 13-year-old Jayme Closs, was missing. It was soon uncovered that she was at the home when the shooting took place. While police wouldn’t announce who placed the 911 call, they said evidence from the call and the crime scene proved that Jayme was present when the shooting took place.

An Amber Alert was issued for the missing teenager and in the weeks that followed, her name shot to the top of the FBI’s missing persons list. Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald has described Jayme as “missing and endangered” but contended that he believes she is still alive. He refused to elaborate as to why investigators are adamant Jayme is not a runaway or involved in the slaying, adding that disclosing more information would compromise the investigation.

Jayme is described as 5 feet tall, 100 lbs, with blonde or strawberry blonde hair. She likes jazz dancing, ice skating and volleyball. She is a eighth-grader at Riverview Middle School. A nationwide search has since been launched and thousands of tips have poured in. Nevertheless, there has been no credible sighting of Jayme. The case has left the residents feeling more then uneasy; the mystery goes much beyond the shocking murders.

Jayme Closs has been found.

Authorities are saying Jayme escaped from a rural home near Gordon, Wisconsin, and was found in a disheveled state by residents. A suspect in the murder of her parents has been arrested.
