Are Shadow People Real?
Thousands of people around the world have reported seeing dark figures known as shadow people. But are these beings real, or are they nothing more than frightening hallucinations?
Shadow People Sightings
Simply put, shadow people are dark humanoid figures thought to be ghosts, demons, or inter-dimensional travelers. Though cases vary, shadow people sightings typically follow a pattern. At first, witnesses spot dark figures moving in their peripheral vision. When they turn to look, however, nothing’s there. Sometimes that’s all that happens (as in my case), but the figures often become more pronounced.
Shadowpeople.org describes the frightening progression:
“For weeks, months, or years, the fast dark movements in your peripheral vision are dismissed until it finally happens without warning. You see the shadow directly in front of you: face to face, blacker than black, darker than dark, like a void that has punched a hole into the inky fabric of night itself.”
Though shadow people nearly always appear abysmally dark, that’s where the similarities end. Descriptions vary from a dark being with glowing red eyes to a black mass with no discernible features. In some reports, shadow people seem to float, glide, or hover. In others, the black figures dart about like cats or birds.
Reactions to shadow people also vary. Many witnesses feel hatred and anger radiating from the dark beings and are terrified of what they might do. Others believe shadow people are there to protect them and have no fear in their presence.
Shadow People Explanations
Though many paranormal enthusiasts believe shadow people are spirits, demons, or inter-dimensional beings, skeptics aren’t so sure. According to several sources on Wikipedia, explanations may include:
- Sleep deprivation – Going without sleep for long periods of time can trigger hallucinations.
- Stimulant psychosis – Certain medications can cause people to see things that aren’t there.
- Sleep paralysis – People suffering from sleep paralysis may hallucinate.
- Mental disturbances – Schizophrenia, delirium, psychosis, dementia, and other mental conditions can all cause visual hallucinations.
- Heightened fear or anxiety – Heightened emotions may cause people to jump to conclusions. For example, a scared person walking alone at night might mistake a ill-light tree for a shadow person.
- Imagination or misinterpretation – Sometimes people just misinterpret what they see or imagine things that aren’t there.
Shadow People Stories
Over the years, many people have sent me stories about dark figures and shadows that behave oddly. Here are a few excerpts.
“One night, I opened the door to check on my son, when I saw a weird shadow sliding across the wall. I’ve never seen a shadow move the way the one this one did. It seemed to be consciously moving away from the light.” – Darth Vader
“I once saw a man in a long coat and tall hat walking back and forth down the hall. It wasn’t until much later that I heard about ‘shadow people’ and realized they matched nearly the exact description of the entity I saw so many years ago.” – The Trench Coat Man
“Though the hospital is long gone, legend has it that deceased patients now haunt Herdklotz Park which stands in its place. At night, people spot shadows flitting in the darkness. In fact, some people living near the park claim these shadowy beings enter their homes after dark.” – Greenville’s Haunted Herdklotz Park
“I was three years old when I first saw the apparition. It was a black figure that always stood in the hallway, right in front of my parents’ bedroom, and I would only see it out of my peripheral vision. Whenever I thought I was being watched, I turned directly to face it, and it would become this massive black ball, fly around the living room and disappear.” – The Man in Black
