7 Haunted Places in Idaho
Icy caves, a haunted cash register, a prison with a violent past…Idaho is home to several haunted hot spots. Here are seven of the most chilling.
Shoshone Ice Caves – Shoshone
A haunted house is one thing. A haunted cave is quite another. Legend has it employees hear footsteps and hushed voices in the Shoshone Indian Ice Caves long after the attraction has closed and visitors have left. Some believe Indian Princess Edahow haunts the caves after being buried in the ice decades ago.
Old Idaho State Penitentiary – Boise
Often called the most haunted building in the state, “Old Pen” has a violent past complete with riots and a botched execution. Now the prison’s former inmates reportedly haunt the old jail. Strange events include touches from invisible entities, sudden feelings of dread or despair, and disembodied whispers in the hallways. The Ghost Adventures crew investigated Old Pen and heard mysterious bangs and voices. They also photographed what they believe to be a male apparition.
BJ’s Bayou – Roberts
A number of spirits reportedly haunt the popular Cajun and Creole restaurant known as BJ’s Bayou. Uniformed soldiers, a Chinese cook, and a woman in a long, flowing dress have all been known to pop in from time to time. The restaurant was formerly a hotel. Perhaps the ghosts were once guests?
Frazier Hall – Idaho State University – Pocatello
Frazier Hall is home to the university’s speech and theater department, and like many (most?) theaters, Frazier has a resident ghost. The ghost known as Alex reportedly ghost stomps up and down the fourth-floor hallway and even tickles the ivories from time to time. Alex may not be alone as performers have reported seeing ghostly figures in the audience.
Ammon Cemetery – Idaho Falls
According to local legend, a child’s ghost appears in a tree near his or her grave, waving at passerby. However, drivers and passengers must remain in the car as it slowly drives past or the friendly spirit will not appear. Witnesses cannot agree if the ghost is a boy or a girl. Perhaps it changes form?
Canyon Hill Cemetery – Caldwell
They say a legless jogger haunts Caldwell’s Canyon Hill Cemetery, and that she’ll appear to those brave enough to park their car near the cemetery at midnight. The “jogger” will float up the the driver’s side window and tap the glass to announce her presence.
K-Mart – Coeur d’Alene
In Coeur d’Alene it isn’t the K-Mart itself that is haunted but rather a register at the store. In 2014, The Coeur d’Alene Press reported that a poltergeist haunts cash register No. 2.
According to store manager Lauren Larson, the pesky machine regularly freezes up, dumps its memory, and erases items mid-transaction. Whenever technicians come to repair the register, it works perfectly until they leave. Larson called the machine “an independent thinker” that regularly “loses its mind.” Employees, naturally, hate working on the device and want to destroy it.
