Ropes Mansion in Salem, Massachusetts

The Ropes #Mansion in #Salem, #Massachusetts was constructed in the late 1720’s by a man named Samuel Bernard, who passed away at the location in 1762. Samuel Bernard also had four wives throughout his lifetime, two of which passed away in the house in 1743 and 1753. Their #spirits are rumored to haunt the location, as well as the #ghost of a man named Judge Nathaniel Ropes, who died of #smallpox in March of 1774. In 1839, Nathaniel Ropes’ daughter, Abigail, was burned alive after the hem of her dress caught #fire while she was carrying hot coals to one of the mansion’s heating stoves. Those visiting Ropes Mansion often report witnessing the ghost of Abigail Ropes (sometimes referred to by the nickname, “Nabby”), or hearing the sounds of her disembodied screams and cries of pain. Others report being touched by an unseen hand, or feeling a strange presence, especially in the #garden area.

Starvation Heights Sanitarium
Olalla, WA

A century after the sanitarium’s operation and the ghosts of murdered patients still haunt the premises. During the 1900’s Linda Burfield Hazzard posed as a doctor and treated patients through extreme starvation. Hazzard’s treatment resulted in the death of over a dozen individuals. The spirits of her victims, particularly two boys named Jeff and Kyle are believed to haunt the grounds. Although the sanitarium is no longer standing, the concrete foundation and incinerator remains. Starvation Heights possesses a history that has not failed to capture national attention. The story of Starvation heights was profiled for the TV show “Deadly Women” and was featured on Ghost Hunters. The tragedy of this house has also been turned into a book and a play.

Old Jail Museum
Jim Thorpe, PA

This two-story Jailhouse dates back to 1871 and now operates as a museum. According to the museum’s official website, the building is made up of 72 rooms, 27 cells, basement dungeon cells, which were used as solitary confinement until 1980, a second floor of women’s cells, and the warden’s living quarters across the front of the building. The Jailhouse was well-known for being the site of the hanging of seven Irish coal miners known as Molly Maguires in the 1800s.

Before their hangings, the men proclaimed their innocence and one of the men, believed to be Alexander Campbell, put his hand on the dirty floor of his cell and then firmly placed it on the wall stating, “This hand print will remain as proof of my innocence.” To this day, the hand print is visible, even after being painted over. Those who are interested in taking a look around can take tours, and wander through the cell blocks, dungeon and even the gallows. Be prepared though, as you never know what or who you’ll find while exploring!

aktiophis:

If life is a game where you have to play with the cards you’ve been dealt, divination is learning to count the cards, and magic is cheating.
